5-Card Stud
5-Card Stud is a relatively slow, social game and is great for “friendly” play. It’s one of the oldest forms of poker and is typically the game you’ll see played in a lot of poker related movies.
What’s the Deal?
The player with the best possible five card combination wins the pot!
So, How do I Play 5-Card Stud?
- All players put in an ante.
- One pocket card is dealt face-down to each player. One card is dealt face-up.
- The player with the lowest face-up card has to place a small bet called a bring-in.
- The first round of betting begins. You can either:
Call, Raise or Fold.
- The third card is then dealt face-up to each player.
- A second round of betting begins. The player with the highest card showing bets first.
- A fourth card, “The Turn” is dealt face-up to each player.
- A third round of betting begins.
- The fifth and final card, called “The River” is dealt face-up to each player.
- A final round of betting begins.
- “The Showdown”. The player with the best five card hand combination, wins.
What’s the difference between 5-Card and 7-Card Stud?
Basically, the games are identical. The only obvious difference is that in 5-Card you get 5 cards to play with and in 7-Card you get 7.
Note: Winning hands must consist of two pocket cards and three community cards.

Tips to get you in the game, and keep you there!
